Geshe Yeshi Chendu
Geshe Yeshi Chendu (or affectionately known as Gen Arjang) belongs to that now increasingly rare generation of senior monks trained in old Tibet and escaped to India with His Holiness the Dali Lama. These senior teachers are not only responsible for training a new generation of monks in exile thus keeping the flame of dharma alive. More importantly, their conviction in the teachings of non-violence, love and forgiveness amidst the chaos of the violence and disruption became living legends for younger generations to emulate.
Geshe Yeshi Chendu was born in Markham in East Tibet, traditionally known as the Kham Province. In 1947 when he was 12 years old, he joined Drepung Loseling Monastery. The same year he received his novice ordination from the Abbot of the monastery and became a monk. At the age of 22 he received his Bhikshu ordination from the Rev. Yongzin Ling Tulku Rinpoche, the elder tutor to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. At the Monastery, he studied Buddhist philosophy, logic, meditation and sacred rituals and prayers. He completed the Highest Monastic degree of a Geshe at the age of 40 in India at the reestablished Drepung Loseling Monastery. Geshe is equivalent to PhD degree in modern university system.
Geshe Yeshi Chendu is one of the most respected and loved senior monk at his monastery. He is responsible for upbringing and education of many new monks. Currently he is in USA to work with Rev. Gankar Tulku to help Gyuto Wheel of Dharma Monastery center to organize teachings, public services and ritual prayer ceremonies.
